Scott Almeida, 35, says he got the idea from watching a family friend succeed at financing orthodontia and Lasik eye and cosmetic surgery. “My first thought wasn’t weddings; it was funerals,” he laughs. “But weddings are a lot more fun.” He wrote up a business plan as a nighttime MBA student at Babson College and began raising money from family and friends. He also tapped $100,000 from an account that he and nine former classmates had set up to back whoever came up with the best startup idea.

It’s More To Your Door offers home delivery of food from 14 area restaurants — ranging from McDonald’s to McAllister’s and Don Pablo’s — for a 20 percent delivery charge. Customers can order via phone or the Web.

Dade and VanSickle run the business out of their home on Chimneylake Drive. That meant minimal startup costs, which allowed them to avoid investors and banks, Dade said.

Before they jumped into the business, Dade said he did intensive market research by passing out surveys asking residents if they’d be interested in such a home-delivery company.

Then, Dade said, he began calling area restaurants and franchises to ask permission to use their logos on the company’s Web site and fliers.

It’s More To Your Door has materials in about seven local hotels, Dade said. He said the company is doing strong business — especially on Fridays, Saturdays and during events at Purdue University.

Gifkins, who spent 10 years and more than $300,000 of his personal savings to create the product, says if it gets just one child off the couch then it’s been worth it!

With the very saturated bottled water industry here in the Philippines, here is a new twist to starting a new bottled water business. Springwise reports: From France to Fiji, bottled water brands rely on spring-based provenance to lure customers. A newcomer is focusing on a different kind of message: positivity. A Bottle Of, which claims to be Australia’s first Naturally Positive spring water, currently comes in three varieties: wellbeing, love and strength.

Launched last December by Heidi Albertiri, a flower stylist who believes in the power of positivity, A Bottle Of hopes to lift people’s moods, encouraging them to “Sip it – Say it – Absorb it – Feel it – Think about it – Repeat it – Believe it”. Given the size of both the self-help market and the bottled water industry, there’s something to be said for a brand that combines the two.

A Bottle Of is currently sold through a small number of retailers, yoga centers and gyms in New South Wales and Victoria, and the company is actively seeking stockists in Melbourne and Sydney. Furthering its message of positive change, a nickel from each bottle sold goes to Food Water Shelter, a not-for-profit organisation that builds eco-friendly children’s villages in Tanzania. How about licensing the brand to other regions where consumers would welcome an affirmational sip?

A local entrepreneur’s latest invention may sound like the latest must-have children’s toy this Christmas, but is making its mark on the gift wrapping industry.

Liz Mrofka, president of the Fab Fob Company, LLC, invented the Fobbie, which is a small decorative circle that can be affixed to packages.

In May, the Fobbie was made available in all Michaels craft stores in the United States and Canada and online for 99 cents apiece.

Mrofka, 49 of Drake, came up with the idea in 2005 while trying to figure out a way to attach decorative woodwork circles she constructed out of beetle kill trees to packages.

The idea hit her at 2 a.m. one morning when she came up with a parallel slot system allowing her to tie the object to a package.

“As I kid I grew up spending hours making bows,” said Mrofka who enjoys creative craft projects. “The beauty of this product is it can be tailored to any market. I would like to expand it into a pet line.”

She started working on prototypes and came up with the disc with eight slots that can be cinched down.
